Did you know that there is more than one type of mulch for your garden and landscaping needs?

If you’re trying to pick out the right type of mulch for your yard, you will want to know about the different types and why each one is different from the others.

For starters, there are two different types of mulch: organic and inorganic. Organic mulches are much more common; however, inorganic mulch, such as plastic and landscape fabrics, are still commonly used.

Wood Chips

Wood chips are one of the most common types of mulch. They not only look good, but they do a great job at keeping your different landscaping items in place. They are also easy to come by.

Leaves

If you want mulch that is cheaper, using leaves is a great idea. You can take fallen leaves from your own yard or purchase them at a store to add them where you want.

The leaves actually provide a lot of nutrients to the surrounding plants to help them grow and thrive.

Grass Clippings

Grass clippings may not be the most appealing option if you are trying to add to your curb appeal; however, they are great to use as a natural lawn fertilizer. They also have a lot of nutrients to use in gardens if you have one of those in your yard. All you have to do is sprinkle the grass clippings into the garden.

Straw or Hay

While you may not think that straw is beneficial for a garden, it actually helps to prevent weeds and add organic matter to the soil to help provide nutrients for the plants, vegetables, or the flowers around it. It also keeps your landscape looking fresh.

Compost

Compost is a dry type of mulch. That means if you want to use it, you should also top it with another type of mulch that is more hospitable for plants such as leaves. The compost will provide a lot of nutrients, while the leaves contain moisture to help plant growth.

Landscape Plastic or Black Plastic

Landscape plastic is not always the prettiest option. However, it can create a micro-climate underneath it that retains moisture, prevents weeds, and provides your plants with everything they need to thrive.
