If you work from home, getting your morning routine right will significantly impact your well-being and performance during the day. Here are a few tips that hopefully will help you get your day started right.

Wake up at the same time 

You may be tempted to stay in bed until last when you work from home. Although you can indulge yourself and do it on exceptional occasions, I would advise you to be more disciplined and wake up at the same time every day. You don’t have to get up very early, just set your alarm for a convenient time. 

Don’t go online first thing

You have to set boundaries between your life and work. Try not to log in right after you wake up – unless it’s urgent, your incoming emails and Slack messages can wait until you’re ready to get to work. If you can, try not to spend too much time mindlessly scrolling through social media. Reduce your screen time as much as possible, and remember that you’ll have plenty of it while you’re working. 

Exercise 

There’s nothing new here. We are all aware of the significance of exercising every day. So get moving and get your endorphins flowing! Go for a walk, do yoga, go to the gym or sign up for an online class. It’s all very individualized. You can mix and match different approaches, so you don’t get bored. 

Take a shower and get dressed 

After you’ve worked out, it’s time to get ready for the new day. Taking a shower and getting dressed before getting to work are very important. You will feel more confident and focused. It’s tempting to get out of bed and sit at your desk right in your pajamas. And then it will be 2:00 p.m., and you’ll have to rush around the apartment to get ready for the video call. Don’t do that. Save yourself the stress! 

Have breakfast

After you’ve worked out and showered, it’s time for breakfast. Drink coffee, tea, or whatever, but make sure you drink water during breakfast as well as throughout the day. Consider getting organized and making breakfast the night before. Oatmeal is a tasty and healthful breakfast’s best choice. When you’re working from home, it’s easy to fill up on chocolate chip cookies and chips, but try to stick to a balanced diet. Your mind and body will thank you. 

Make home chores

Set aside time each morning to do tasks at home. It will help you feel more productive before starting work and less distracted by cleaning or laundry while sitting at your desk. Save your time and set the alarm on your phone to avoid getting carried away. Do whatever you have time to do and then stop. It’s essential to meet deadlines here, too. 

Set goals for the day

To reach those realistic goals you set for the day, make sure you’re not distracted by things like social media and push notifications. Block incoming messages and notifications during work hours or use an app like Opal to completely block your phone from accessing apps. When limiting screen time, you can follow the SMART method. It means that your screen goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-limited. So, for example, don’t set a vague goal like “I’m going to reduce my screen time drastically.” Instead, focus on things like “I’ll watch one episode a day” or “I’ll flip through Instagram for 15 minutes before I get to work.”

Finally, limit the number of choices you have to make first thing every morning. Prepare as best you can the night before: lay out your clothes, think about what you want to eat for breakfast or lunch. Cook in batches if you can. The less time you spend making trivial decisions, the more time you spend on the things that matter to you and make you happy.
