Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been recognized as a favorable therapy worldwide as it can be used against several pathologies. It can be used during pre or post-treatment. It is beneficial for the body for surgical preparation as well as to heal the wounds of the surgery. The high pressure (2-3 ATA) in the hyperbaric chamber results in diffusing a high amount of oxygen (nearly 100%) into the blood plasma. It increases the blood flow to the tissues and helps in better oxygenation. It also promotes healing, increases the efficiency of WBC, and deactivates body toxins.

Hbot is a safe and painless therapy that helps the body to rejuvenate. Its results are astonishing and doctors are considering it all around the globe to build a healthy community. This article highlights the number of sessions and time required for the users to undergo this therapy under different conditions.

TIME REQUIRED BY HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY TO WORK

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is just like any other therapy session that requires more than one visit. The time frame of this therapy is not fixed. It can be of 5 minutes or up to 2 hours depending upon the illness and the severity of the disease. It can be one time a day or twice according to the recommendations. The oxygenation increases 20 times the normal value under 2 – 3 ATA pressure and nearly 100% oxygen level.

Normally, the minimum time of Hbot chambers for any treatment is certainly 90 minutes. Consistency is the main key to achieving results quickly. Therefore, one should not skip therapy days in their weekly sessions.

ESTIMATED TIME/SESSIONS OF HBOT FOR VARIOUS PROCEDURES

There are different numbers of sessions and timing required for different medical illnesses. Some important information about the time and sessions required by the most common Hbot therapy procedures are given as follows:

SESSIONS FOR ANTI-AGING

According to the studies, there are almost 60 sessions daily required for anti-aging for better oxygen penetration into the skin vessels. Every session is 1.5 hours long with nearly 100% oxygen at 2 ATA pressure.

SESSIONS FOR AUTISM

Autism is a neurological and generative disorder. It affects the nervous system as well as the speech and cognitive behavior of the patient. It requires long-term treatment but a few hyperbaric sessions can also show prominent improvement in the behavior and skills of the patient. The researchers highlight that even 20 sessions of Hbot at 1.5 ATA pressure and 100% oxygen helps autistic patients in improving their symptoms.

SESSIONS FOR BRAIN INJURY

The brain is a very sensitive organ of the body as it is responsible for controlling the response of different parts of the body. Any damage to the organ can lead to indirect effects on the other structures. Therefore, any type of brain injury takes plenty of hyperbaric oxygen sessions for better cerebral perfusion and to heal properly. Normally, it takes 50 to 80 sessions daily or twice a day with a pressure of 2-3 ATA.

SESSIONS FOR CO POISONING

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a life-risking stage but hyperbaric oxygen therapy can heal it quickly and thoroughly. Only three to four sessions are required to overcome the risk completely. The increased oxygen concentration increases the oxygen binding affinity of hemoglobin and kicks out CO from the blood.

SESSIONS FOR COSMETIC SURGERY

Cosmetic surgeries are common these days. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used before and after cosmetic procedures to rejuvenate the skin as well as to decrease the post-procedure recovery time. It takes only 3 – 4 sessions (before & after) of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for cosmetic procedures each of 1 hour in 1.5 – 2 ATA pressure.

SESSIONS FOR COVID

Covid has affected us globally and with the help of hyperbaric therapy, we can tackle problems like shortness of breath and unstable oxygen saturation arising during covid illness. The doctors recommend 10 sessions (one daily)  each of 1 hour & 45 minutes. The pressure is 2.4 ATA with nearly 100% oxygen in the hyperbaric chamber.

SESSIONS FOR DEPRESSION & ANXIETY

Depression and anxiety are more of mental treatment and require psychotherapies. However, hyperbaric oxygen therapy plays a significant role to increase cerebral perfusion and improve behavior. There are a total of 40 sessions (5 sessions per week) with nearly 100% oxygen and 1.5 – 2 ATA pressure in such conditions. The results show prominent improvement in mood and behavior.

SESSIONS FOR HEARING LOSS

Many problems of the ear can be healed using hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hearing loss requires different pressures according to the response of the ear. The change in pressure should be gradual otherwise it can cause more complications. The recommended pressure is 2 – 2.4 ATA daily for 15 – 20 sessions. The normal time for each session is 1 hour and 30 minutes each. However, the pressure can be changed according to the response and recommendation of the audiologist.

SESSIONS FOR NON-HEALING WOUNDS

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wound healing can be carried out in a multiplace hyperbaric chamber. But there is no restriction on using only multiplace instead of a monoplace chamber. It commonly takes 50 sessions, five days a week to see a prominent result in treating non-healing wounds. Each session takes 1 hour & 15 minutes in which the chamber provides 95% oxygen and 2.4 ATA pressure.

SESSIONS FOR SKIN BURN

Skin burn can be mild or moderate depending upon the surface area. A skin burn is therefore measured in TBSA (total body surface area) to get an idea about the damaged area. The hyperbaric oxygen sessions depend upon the percentage of TBSA on the burnt skin.

● For 40-50% TBSA

There are normally 3 sessions for two weeks each of 120 minutes.

● For >50% TBSA

There are daily sessions for 6 weeks each of 1.5 hours with 2 ATA pressure and nearly 100% oxygen.
