Identifying the quality of tiles: 3 basic strategies

Tiles manufacturers, including DBL Ceramics Limited have a technical approach to determining the quality of tiles.

If you believe it’s difficult for ordinary folks to determine the quality of a set of tiles, think again. Because it is NOT DIFFICULT at all with the correct information.

Also, note that – you cannot check the qualities of tiles from different categories in the same way! However, I will provide a general yet practical guide for evaluating the qualities of various types of tiles.

Let’s begin with the first strategy.

Checking the grade of a set of tiles: 2 Grades

This is the most common strategy to find out the quality of a tile set. Basically, grades work as indicators for the standard of these wall and floor supplies. Having said that, there are mainly two grades for tiles, that are-

  1. AAA grade: No flaws
  • The edges will be smoothened out
  • The flatness will be perfect
  • There will be distortion in shapes
  1. B grade: Imperfect
  • The tiles will have broken edges
  • The flatness won’t be perfect
  • There will be some distortion in shapes

So, how do I know the grade? Simple, it will be mentioned right on the packages. There will be other details too. You can just check for the grade, and you should be able to find the grade this way.

You can check edges, flatness, and shapes too. Find out about those in the following sections.

Examining the flatness of tiles

I have mentioned that tile manufacturers have special tools for checking quality. And, you can check I said that tiles Barrie manufacturers use specialized tools to ensure quality.

You can also check them without using any tools. You may have also noticed that I specified flatness in the grades. Considering that, you can now use another strategy in addition to checking grades.

That is, examining the flatness. You must place two tiles face to face for this. Then, vertically, pick up the two tiles. Examine the gap between the tiles after holding them that way.

The smaller the gap, the better. In other words, the smaller the gap between the tiles, the better the flatness. As a result, the tiles are of high quality. On the other hand, if the gap is more significant, the tiles are of poor quality.

There is more to the trick. You can try putting a piece of paper between the gap. If the paper doesn’t go down the opening, the page is narrow. If the paper gets inside the gap, you can check the size of the page.

Testing low water absorption

You’ll see if the water passes through the tiles here. To do so, place a tile on the other side. Then, on the opposite side of the tiles, drop some water in a precise spot.

If the water is absorbed, the tile will deteriorate more quickly. On the other hand, the tiles will be durable if the water is not absorbed at all.

Furthermore, tiles can absorb water partially too. The lower the permeability, the better. Still, you will see people use the tiles with high water absorption.

Usually, these tiles have a waterproof surface. So, they do okay for kitchen, dining.

Knocking on the tiles: Literally, listen to the sound of a tile

The sound of different grades of tiles varies as well. Isn’t that fascinating? Let’s find out what a tile’s sound says about it.

Pick up a tile vertically first. Then securely grip it in one hand. Then, using your other hand’s knuckle, whack the tile. Now pay attention to how the tiles sound.

In a decent quality tile, the sound will be low-pitched. Consider a container that is completely filled with something. The tile would sound somewhat the same as a stuffed contained would sound when you stomp on it.

A poor-quality tile, on the other hand, will sound high-pitched.

Wrapping up

You can now assess the quality of the tile you are considering for your future home. It is critical to inspect the quality.

However, most of us are unable to assess the quality. Finally, you are in the dark about the quality of the chosen tiles.
